Ken Brown – the Kitty Kurtis Farm in Greenwood Township in Clare County is owned by the Brown family and is operated by Ken & Pat Brown and their sons Seth and Ian Humphres. It is the first farm verified in Clare county and one of the few in Michigan that has been verified by MDA on all three systems – Farmstead, Livestock and Cropland. The Kitty Kurtis farm is located about 6 miles west of Harrison on M-61. It has 1,560 acres in the farm located in 3 adjacent sections – 16, 17 & 21 of Greenwood Township. This farm is a cow/calf operation with about 270 cows and equal number of calves. Cows begin calving in April. The calves remain with the mother cows until fall when they are shipped to other farm owned by the Brown Family, for finishing before being shipped to market.

There were a number of environmental issues that needed to be addressed prior to being verified. Cattle needed to be fenced out of the streams, stream crossings needed to be provided, and watering sited established. At the Farmstead, new fueling stations were installed, approved chemical storage provided, as well as a number of other issues addressed
